Alright, Central fam — it's happening. For the next twenty-four weeks, we're rewatching Speed Grapher from the very first frame, one episode per week, and this post is your home base. Whether you're a grizzled veteran who's been defending this show since the DVD era or a newcomer who just found it on a streaming service and wants backup, you've got a seat.

How this works: every week, we drop a recap, some craft observations, and discussion questions. Newcomers — read the recap, skip anything behind the spoiler fence, and jump into the comments. Veterans — keep your takes spoiler-tagged until the relevant week. We're running a strict no-future-spoilers policy in the comments. Let's keep this welcoming.

Week One: The Premiere

The setup: We meet Tatsumi Saiga, a war photographer turned celebrity paparazzo who's completely burned out — taking pictures of the powerful not to expose them, but because he's forgotten what he's even looking for. An assignment leads him toward the Roppongi Club, a rumored playground for Tokyo's untouchable elite, and through a series of events too good to spoil here, Saiga's camera — and his entire nervous system — get permanently rewired.

That's all you get, newcomers. That's the launchpad.

Craft Corner: What to Watch For

The lens language. Gonzo was doing something genuinely unusual here: framing shots the way Saiga would see them. Notice how often the camera lingers before it moves — that's a photographer's eye, not an action director's. The premiere teaches you how to look before it asks you to feel.

Color as class. Track the palette. The world above the Club's threshold is rendered in deep golds and reds; Saiga's day-to-day Tokyo is gray with the saturation wrung out. The show is grading its economic argument into every frame.

Sound design in quiet rooms. Everyone remembers the score's big swings, but the premiere's most unsettling audio is the hush — rooms so expensive they absorb sound. Silence as a luxury good.

Discussion Questions (Spoiler-Safe)

  1. First-time viewers: what was your read on Saiga in the premiere — burned-out idealist or something colder?
  2. The show opens on photography as a profession before it's ever a power. Does that framing change how you watch his choices?
  3. Veterans: what's one production detail from the premiere you didn't catch until a later rewatch?

Spoiler Territory — Veterans Only

🚨 Below this line, feel free to discuss how the premiere's setups pay off across the full series. Newcomers, this is your stop. 🚨

The premiere plants the Euphoria transformation with remarkable restraint — Gonzo gives you just enough that the full reveal recontextualizes rather than shocks. On rewatch, the whole first act plays like a magic trick being set up in plain sight.

Drop your takes below. Same time next week — bring your screenshots.
